Back when I was standing tall I never bothered to notice all the people living on their knees, all the people whose lives are melancholy little tunes. Those are the ones I'm fighting for.
~ Waldo

Waldo is a major character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is Sunny's mentor and was once Baron Quinn's Regent just like him, before losing his legs and becoming confined to a wheelchair. The loss of his position caused his outlook on the world to change, prompting him to eventually betray Quinn and act as a spy for the Widow, later becoming her advisor in her mission to change the Badlands for the better.

He was portrayed by Stephen Lang.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • He raised Sunny and trained him on how to fight so that he could survive in the brutal conditions of the Badlands, eventually shaping him into the greatest Clipper in the Badlands. His care for Sunny remains present throughout the entire series, even warning Sunny about working with the Widow despite the fact that he is currently allied with her.
  • After Sunny revealed that he wanted to escape the Badlands with his wife and unborn child, Waldo gives him a token that could be traded into the River King in exchange for safe passage out of the Badlands. He explains that he feels like he owes Sunny because he should have saved him from life in the Badlands a long time ago.
  • He acts as a spy for the Widow in order to help her take down Quinn, as the loss of his legs caused him to finally realize that tyrants like Quinn are the reason why the state of the Badlands is so bad, and that he needs to be taken down.
  • After Sunny is imprisoned by Quinn, Waldo breaks him out of prison before fleeing to the Widow's territory.
  • Acts as the Widow's advisor and helps her in negotiating with the other Barons who wish to see her overthrown due to her opposition to the Cog slave trade.
  • After the Widow compromises her ideals to work with Quinn in order to take down the other Barons, Waldo decides he cannot work with her any longer as she has effectively become another tyrant.
  • Before he abandons the Badlands, his last act is helping Tilda escape after she is imprisoned for turning against the Widow.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • He doesn't meet the admirable standards of characters such as Sunny or Bajie, who both actively fight to protect the world simply because its the right thing to do rather than out of pragmatism.
  • He was once a violent Regent for Quinn, killing countless innocent people without remorse, and even training Sunny to have the same mentality.
  • He believes that people should not have any emotional attachments, telling both Sunny and Tilda to not fall in love as he claims it will get them killed.
  • He shows himself to be a womanizer, admitting he "wicked" several women over the years and likely has children that he doesn't even know about, and goes on to flirt with Baron Chau during the Conclave between the Barons.
  • When Sunny brings M.K. to Waldo and explains he isn't responding well to training, Waldo goads M.K. into attacking him and then overpowers him, injuring him unnecessarily to teach him to not underestimate his opponent.
  • He is a well-intentioned extremist like the Widow, as he puts it they need to "blow up the system and start again" which he knows will hurt a lot of people even if it leads to positive change.
  • The Widow implies he always desired to be a Baron, and while it's unconfirmed that this was his motivation, his actions up to this point do suggest that he always had aspirations for power until it became clear that the Widow was a hypocrite.
