Yes… it is an unavoidable truth… but I still believe what happened that day… that miracle.
~ Uri being curious as to how he and Kenny became friends despite their violent meeting.

Uri Reiss is a character in the manga and anime, Attack on Titan. He was a former king of the Walls and a wielder of the Founding Titan, which he possessed from his father. He would during his reign, end the persecution of the Ackerman bloodline after he befriended Kenny Ackerman. During the end of Uri’s life, he transferred the Founding Titan to his niece, Frieda Reiss.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • Before he inherited the Founding Titan and got controlled by the First King’s will, Uri would relentlessly plead to his father to use the powers of the Founder to kill off all Titans so humanity inside the Walls could be freed.
  • Once Kenny Ackerman tried to assassinate him, Uri would easily incapacitate the man but refused to kill him. Instead, Uri bowed down and apologized to Kenny, knowing about the history regarding the Ackerman clan’s persecution by the Royal Family. This act of pacifism would furthermore start a friendship between Uri and Kenny.
  • Uri would end the persecution of the Ackerman clan after befriending Kenny, making it so that Levi, Kuchel, Mikasa, and Mikasa’s father wouldn’t be pursued by the Interior Police.
  • Overall, Uri was a pacifist who, like his ancestor Karl Fritz, wished to create a paradise for the people within the Walls. Not caring for power and materialism like most other members of the royal council. However, knowing about the inevitable destruction awaiting his people from the outside world and doing nothing about it due to the guilt of his people’s past crimes, makes this a minor reason.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • Despite working with high recourses, being a king and the holder of the Founding Titan. Uri fails the admirable standards to most other heroic characters in the series.
  • While his individual personality is clear, Uri still suffers from moral agency issues due to being under the influence of the “vow to renounce all war”. This Vow is an inherited declaration that the upcoming Founding Titan wielders who are blood related to Karl Fritz shall not be able to use the Founding Titan's powers to fight off the world’s forces outside of Paradis Island, and that they would only try to uphold his “Paradise” within the Walls. With this being the reason why Uri, despite having once been the most powerful being on the planet, never attempted to wipe out his persecutors from the outside world, compared to most other heroic characters who earned their heroism for doing exactly that.
    • Furthermore, the vow also made it that Uri would feel the same guilt that Karl Fritz felt for the actions committed by the Eldian empire, to the point were Uri, along with the other Founding Titans from his family, would be completely content with the preordained genocide awaiting his people.
