Toriel, formerly known as Queen Toriel Dreemurr, is a major character in Undertale, serving as a major character in the Neutral Route, a major protagonist in the True Pacifist Route and the opening heroic antagonist of the Genocide Route.
She is the former queen of the Underground and wife of Asgore Dreemurr, as well as the mother of Asriel Dreemurr and the adopted mother of Chara Dreemurr. After Chara and Asriel's deaths and Asgore declaring his intentions of wiping out humanity, Toriel abandons her people and moves to the Ruins, where she takes care of the humans that fall down to the Underground over the years.
Her Good Ranking[]
Debated Validations[]
- While she does say that Asgore could've just gotten one human SOUL, crossed the Barrier and gotten six more to free monsterkind, it's unknown what she meant by this statement. While she could have meant that Asgore should've killed several humans right away the second he got the chance instead of waiting a century underground until seven humans enter the Underground by themselves, she could've also meant that, after crossing the Barrier, he should've gotten a few SOULs from more peaceful means, such as some humans willingly offering their own or getting them through people that were already near death and didn't have much time left. Not to mention she quite clearly wouldn't have taken much joy from that plan either, simply viewing it as the lesser evil when compared to Asgore's plan of waiting years underground, rotting away until humans fall down into the Underground by themselves.
Her Heroic Deeds[]
- Tried to rule the Underground peacefully when she was a queen.
- Was devastated by her children's deaths.
- Though not completely, she still disagreed with and criticized Asgore's genocidal plans.
- She took care of the six humans that fell down into the Underground before the events of the game.
- Toriel befriends Sans by telling jokes together and makes him promise to protect any human that comes through the Ruins.
- She saved Frisk, a child she never met before, from Flowey, who was trying to murder them.
- She takes care of Frisk, and while she wants them to be with her forever, it's only because she knows outside isn't safe for them as a human, and she is very lonely in the Ruins.
- Saves Frisk from Asgore in the True Pacifist Route.
- Supports you in your battle with Asriel in the True Pacifist Route.
- After moving to the Underground, she became a teacher and has the option to adopt Frisk.
- Though unsuccessfully, she tries to rule the underground peacefully again in the "Exiled Queen" endings.
- Doesn't try to kill you during her fight, and while she attacks you and tells you to go away, she still doesn't want to truly hurt you and just wants you to prove yourself to be strong enough to leave the Ruins.
- She can't be compared to characters like Sans, Undyne, Alphys, the Six Humans or Asriel as they have much more resources and knowledge than she does.
Why Doesn't She Stand Out?[]
- She ends up failing the standards to Mettaton and Papyrus.
- While she did want to save humanity from Asgore, the same can be said about Mettaton, who was far more active in his plans than Toriel was. While it's true he has higher resources, he barely uses them throughout the entire game.
- When it comes to Papyrus, he has as much resources as she does but genuinely tries to redeem Frisk in the Genocide Route and, even after being decapitated by the human and seconds away from death, tells them they can be a good person if they just try. Papyrus also makes sure that he doesn't kill the protagonist when their health is almost fully depleted, whereas Toriel will kill them, even if on pure accident.
- She abandoned the entire Underground and her own husband during the hardest time in his life, shortly after the deaths of both their children, because she didn't agree with something Asgore declared while not controlling his emotions, which he regretted shortly afterwards. She had the choice to try and calm down the monsters and offer a more peaceful solution, but instead she just left and abandoned them all.
- She's a massive jerk to Asgore, attacking him with a fireball, calling him a cowardly whelp, scaring him off after reaching the surface and even refusing to be simply friends with him despite him being polite and remorseful over what he has done. This is without mentioning that her anger is rather hypocritical, as despite going off at Asgore for not using her method of freeing the underground, she makes no attempts to do this herself.
- This rudeness is not limited solely towards Asgore, as she has also been intimidating other monsters living in the Ruins to the point where they avoid her out of fear.
Trivia[]
- She was once approved as Near Pure Good, before it was decided that not only was she too standard and failed the admirable standards hard, but her corrupting factors were also far too much.
- She is the only Undertale Heroic Benchmark to be a main character, while the other two (Napstablook and Muffet) are minor characters.
