~ The king, thanking the Starbarians for rescuing Bustilda. |
The King is a tertiary hero in Starbarians. He is introduced in the first episode, "The Starbarians' Die", as an eccentric individual eager to thank Killgar and Hogstrong for rescuing Princess Bustilda from her kidnapper Siad.
He was voiced by the series' creator Harry Partridge himself.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- He expresses his noble nature to Killgar and Hogstrong for saving his daughter from the villain Siad, offering them anything they wish from his kingdom.
- He clearly shows love and concern for his daughter, at least in the fact that he is willing to sacrifice the resources of his kingdom to ensure her safe return, which is a form of paternal heroism. Also, consider the fact that he showed displeasure when the Starbarians put forward a candidacy for her as an additional prize.
- He is a scapegoat, as he is killed by the Starbarians for no reason, solely because of their selfish desire, even despite the good he offered them, which makes him empathetic.
- This factor is further strengthened by the fact that his daughter was again taken hostage by the Starbarians and she probably saw her father being killed.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- He completely fails the franchise's heroic standard, as he represents the "benevolent ruler" archetype who only exists to reward heroes.
- He suffers slightly from moral agency, as when the Starbarians ask him to take everything, including his daughter, his reaction is one of shock and helplessness. He is unable to assert his authority or protect his kingdom or daughter, making him weak and ineffective compared to the more dominant Starbarians.
- Due to minimal screen time, he had little opportunity to demonstrate significant heroic qualities.
Trivia[]
- Although the character is never named in the episode, nor is he explicitly said to be a king, it can be inferred that he is so through his dialogue, "Take anything you desire from my kingdom", and his ability to reward the Starbarians with vast amounts of weapons, alcohol, or money. If the royal family of his planet follows the same structure as that of real life monarchies, then it can also be inferred that Bustilda is his daughter
