~ Mr. Small in "The Silence." |
Mr. Steven "Steve" Small, mostly referred to as Mr. Small, is a supporting character in the animated series The Amazing World of Gumball. He is the highly eccentric, hippy, free-spirited guidance counselor at Elmore Jr. High.
Typical of hippies, Small has a love for nature, meditation, and new-age philosophies, with a particular obsession for alternative medicine. While his intentions are good while trying to help students overcome their problems, his methods are extremely unconventional and ridiculous - ironically, he tends to act like the one that needs the most help.
He is voiced by Lewis Macleod in Season 1 and by Adam Long for the rest of the series.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
In General[]
- He genuinely cares about doing his job and helping the students of Elmore Jr. High become happy. This is shown in "The Advice," where he becomes extremely sad after feeling like his job is unfulfilling, remarking how he wishes he could inspire troubled kids in difficult situations, trying to give them good advice.
- He also cares greatly about nature, animals, and the planet, as he encourages people to go green and even ends up living in the forest in "The Stink" over minor things like hurting flies and to avoid buying from companies that don't locally source their products, and in "The Schooling" he frees animals out of cages, and although it was irresponsible since he freed animals from a store, he was well-intended and from his point of view, wanted the animals to be free.
- While he was a wrathful jerk and had more corrupting qualities in Season 1, such as when he manipulated Gumball and Darwin into fearing the "Silence Snake" in "The Sock," this was mostly a result of inconsistent writing in the show's early stages and was subverted starting with Season 2. Most of what comes afterwards generally amounts to heating-up periods.
Season 2[]
- In "The Banana", he tries to solve the dispute between Banana Joe with Gumball and Darwin, by claiming that someone's worst enemy is himself and told Joe to give them the new pen. He was also supportive towards Banana Joe when he injured his face accidentally politely telling him to be more careful in the future.
- In "The Sidekick", he wanted to give money to Gumball and Darwin under the pretense of charity, over a tied up Jackie Wilson (Darwin kidnapped her earlier and wanted to return her to her house), but this backfires horribly on him.
- In "The Photo" he is sympathetic towards a crying Gumball over a bad album photo, and gives him a second chance to make a second photo so he can be happy.
- In "The Sweaters" he tries to solve the conflict between Gumball and Darwin with Caltron and Troy, and later he massages Gumball during a tennis match.
Season 3[]
- In "The Gripes" he wants to give a paycheck to the Wattersons when he believed that they were poor, and was disgusted when he found out that they were lying showing that he has standards against lying.
- In "The Fraud", along with the others he tries to stop Principal Brown from blowing up their school, comforting him for lying about having a degree.
- In "The Void," he helps Gumball and Darwin rescue Molly from the titular dimension and return her to Elmore after she was frozen there. He plays a crucial role as he is the one who initially suspects the Void's existence which allows it to be uncovered, and the four of them escape in his van Janice, as it is capable of launching them back into reality.
- In "The Shell", he helps Darwin not to embarass himself in public by moving his mouth so he can say the right words.
- In "The Question he goes out of his way to chase Gumball and Darwin, in order to explain them the purpose of life.
- In "The Society", along with the others, he forms a secret society in order to make Gumball feel better about himself.
Season 4[]
- In "The Check", he tells to Anais where the bank is when she asked him.
Season 5[]
- In "The Stories", he helps Gumball and Darwin, to give a story for Molly to tell them in order for others to no longer get bored by her stories.
- In "The Choices", he wants to hug Nicole in order to help her.
- In "The Ollie", he tries to save Darwin from crashing, although he failed to do so.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While he passes the baseline by rescuing Molly from the Void while helping Gumball and Darwin escape, he still fails the admirable standards to all of the Wattersons (except Richard), along with Carrie, Alan, and Rob.
- He is extremely incompetent and reckless to the point where his misguided advice can cause massive problems or hurt people.
- One example is "The Silence," where in an attempt to make Gumball and Darwin speak to each other again, he ends up swelling their tongues up with excess fluid, with him even remarking that the same procedure had done so before to other patients permanently.
- In "The Allergy," he uses a bunch of acupuncture needles to solve Darwin's allergy, and when he sneezes, they puncture Gumball and Small. A related scene has Small put crystals in Darwin's nose, which he sneezes out of the window, stabbing Rocky and causing him to fall off of his ladder.
- In "The Painting," he tries to teach Gumball and Darwin methods of using their energy in a more constructive way, but he uses some questionable methods, such as throwing paint on them, which burned their eyes, and forcing Gumball to smash a picture of "inhibitions" on a wooden plank with only his weak body, injuring him greatly and causing him to cry.
- In "The Saint," he tries to raise awareness of protecting pigeons by skydiving alongside Gumball and Darwin and displaying a banner on the plane, but he does not give proper parachutes to the kids (as they are too small), resulting in them injuring themselves greatly as they simply plummet to the ground. The plane also crashes immediately after because no one was flying it, something that was apparently never coordinated by Small.
- In "The Safety," he shows a terrifying video about "safety" that traumatized his students and himself due to its creepy protagonist. It ends up scarring Darwin so badly that he goes mad and tries to take over the world as a dictator, looking to constrict everyone's movement, diet, and routine to be as "safe" as possible.
- Throughout all of "The Advice," he doesn't make it clear enough to Gumball and Darwin not to take his advice so literally, which ends up causing mass destruction around the school and lands most of the students in the infirmary.
