Everybody's a critic.
~ Squidward's catchphrase.
Oh, why must every eleven minutes of my life be filled with misery?! WHY?!?
~ Squidward in Club SpongeBob, also his most famous quote.
Morons.
~ Squidward when considering the citizens of Bikini Bottom idiots.

Squidward J. Quincy Tentacles is the tritagonist of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants franchise.

He is a generally sarcastic and snarky octopus, primarily known for being the direct opposite to SpongeBob. He aspires to be a professional clarinet player, but due to his lack of skills he cannot fully achieve his dream.

He is voiced by Rodger Bumpass.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • He saved SpongeBob from an incoming 18-Wheeler, allowing him to officially crosses the goodness zone
  • In “Pizza Delivery,” when a rude customer was extremely mean to SpongeBob for not giving him his drink, he stood up to the customer (once again crossing the goodness zone) by slamming the pizza in his face out of revenge for SpongeBob.
  • He felt remorse for unknowingly feeding an explosive pie to SpongeBob, and he voluntarily spent the entire day doing everything on SpongeBob's bucket list with him as a way of letting him enjoy his final hours alive, even crying when he thought SpongeBob finally died.
  • When Santa Claus didn't visit Bikini Bottom, he restored SpongeBob's faith in Christmas and gave away all of his belongings to everyone in town.
  • He tried to defeat Man-Ray, Dirty Bubble and Barnacle Man (Barnacle Boy's evil alter-ego) alongside Mermaid Man, SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy.
  • In “Born Again Krabs,” he called out Mr. Krabs for selling SpongeBob for a measly 62 cents to the Flying Dutchman.
  • In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, when he saw that Chum Bucket suddenly became popular, he was going to tell King Neptune and the police that Plankton blamed Krabs and stole the secret formula, although he didn't know that he planned to take over Bikini Bottom.
  • He rescued SpongeBob from four restaurant owners who were trying to kidnap him.
  • He participated in Mrs. Puff's documentary in both "Boat Smarts" and "Yellow Pavement" to show what a good driver is supposed to be like.
  • In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, he assisted SpongeBob and his friends in defeating Burger-Beard.
  • In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, he stood up to King Poseidon when he wanted to kill SpongeBob and the gang.
  • In “SpongeChovy,” he turned everybody in Bikini Bottom back to normal by ordering pizza after they were brainwashed by the anchovies.
  • In Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, he helps Sandy, her family, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs and Patrick return Bikini Bottom back to the ocean.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • Although SpongeBob is shown to have more capabilities than him, making it unfair to compare the two, he fails the Average Admirable Standards to Patrick, who has done more heroic acts than him with lower resources.
    • Screen time doesn't help either since Squidward has a screen time of 300+ episodes, but he never did anything unique in any of them.
  • He is extremely arrogant and selfish and acts like a jerk way too much to be NPG. He is also on & off, because he has antagonistic roles and can be quite lethal towards SpongeBob and Patrick. While he is portrayed as a scapegoat in many different episodes, there are plenty of other cases where he goes too far for little to no reason.
    • He generally thinks anybody who dislikes his art/music has awful taste, and he never goes out of his way to improve either of them. It should be noted that all of his artwork are self-portraits and that his motivation for becoming a successful musician/artist is for people's reception towards them, as opposed to his passion for doing it.
    • As early as "Naughty Nautical Neighbors", he temporarily destroyed SpongeBob and Patrick's friendship just because they were exchanging compliments towards each other in their backyards.
    • In "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost", he manipulated SpongeBob and Patrick into thinking he was a ghost to strike fear into them and so that they could do everything he wanted them to. One of these acts included forcing SpongeBob to stay outside overnight until he could perform a song with a piece of tissue paper.
    • He viciously competed against SpongeBob in "Employee of the Month" to have his picture up on The Krusty Krab's wall, setting up many different traps in the process so he could get to work first.
    • He pulled an extremely harmful and cruel prank on SpongeBob in front of everybody at The Krusty Krab during "Fools in April". While Squidward did seem remorseful, he was hesitant to properly apologize at first and couldn't even physically bring himself to say the word 'sorry'.
    • In "Grandma's Kisses", he publicly humiliated and laughed at SpongeBob in front of all the customers in The Krusty Krab just because he received affection from his grandma. At the end of the episode, it was revealed he and a crowd of customers stalked SpongeBob so that they could witness a majority of the episode's events and laugh at him even more.
    • He caused mayhem across the titular town in "Squidville" by taking away someone's walking cane, blowing a clarinet onto someone's face, rearranging the faces of two different people, and vandalizing houses.
    • He took advantage of SpongeBob's hospitality for several months, or possibly a year, in "Can You Spare a Dime?" by making him do everything for him, never getting out of SpongeBob's bed, and being unwilling to find a new job. He stayed for so long that the French Narrator needed to step out, and even when SpongeBob showed him job offers and told him to get a job, Squidward either chose to ignore this or insult him.
    • He terrified SpongeBob and Patrick by trying to attract a seabear to them in "The Camping Episode".
    • He repeatedly tried to get SpongeBob and Patrick eaten alive by a worm in "The Lost Mattress". He even blatantly threatened to murder SpongeBob in front of him.
      • This wouldn't be the only time he threatened to murder SpongeBob, as in "That Sinking Feeling", he told them if his house wasn't back to normal on the count of three, he will grind them into chum.
      • Conversely, in "Mermaid Pants", he took his role as a villain seriously and deliberately tried to kill SpongeBob and Patrick by sending them to boiling grease.
    • In "Funny Pants", he manipulated SpongeBob into thinking his laugh box would permanently burn up if he laughed. SpongeBob eventually thought he lost his laugh and became severely depressed.
    • In "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?", he didn't show any remorse for hurting SpongeBob's feelings and making him run away from Bikini Bottom. He even cheerfully said if he had known that was the last time he'd ever see SpongeBob, he would slam the door in his face much harder.
      • While he did eventually help Patrick and Sandy with bringing SpongeBob back, it was only because Mr. Krabs promised to give him a Fabergé egg once the deed was done.
    • In "I ♥ Dancing", he tired SpongeBob out all day just so he wouldn't be able to attend a dancing audition.
    • He bulldozed SpongeBob, Patrick and Howard's homes down a trench in "New Fish in Town".
    • In "Squid Defense", he tried to use karate on an innocent person which led to arrest.
    • In "Don't Look Now", he terrorized SpongeBob and Patrick by dressing up as a fisherman from a horror movie they watched and making them think he was going to kill them.
    • Throughout "Little Yellow Book", he read SpongeBob's diary out loud and didn't show any remorse even when SpongeBob burst into tears and when he had tomatoes thrown at him. Even Mr. Krabs was disgusted by this act.
    • He tried to drop SpongeBob and Patrick into lava in "Mermaid Pants".
    • Throughout "Sportz?", he tricked SpongeBob and Patrick into brutally beating each other up by passing it off as a game.
    • He was very eager to go to SpongeBob's house and see his dead body after he was presumed dead in "Broken Alarm".
    • In "Friendiversary" he erased all of SpongeBob's memories out of spite, and while he did attempt to get his memories back, it was only because Mr. Krabs forced him to do it since SpongeBob the only one who knew the password to the secret formula's safe.
  • He is an extremely lazy worker at the Krusty Krab and constantly leaves SpongeBob to do all of the work for him.
  • He is a hero by proxy as he wants nothing to do with good or evil.
  • Squidward is a hypocrite, since he chews SpongeBob and Patrick out for disturbing him but in some episodes Squidward has no problem making their lives miserable as well. Also, he constantly makes nihilistic rants but deep down he is typically a coward that is willing to throw people under the bus to save his skin and is genuinely scared of being harmed by anybody other than himself.
  • He has a couple of moments of admitting his misanthropy in addition to his hypocritical nihilistic rants, such as when he sang a song telling how much he hates people and when he blatantly admitted he hated everyone in the episode where Sandy and SpongeBob were serving the customers.
  • While he may not be as bad as Krabs and Plankton, he occasionally has villainous roles such as reading SpongeBob's diary and showing zero remorse for it.
