Spike Bulldog (simply known as Spike) is the deuteragonist of the animated series Tom and Jerry.
Spike was voiced by the late Billy Bletcher (who also voices Pete) in earlier shorts and later the late Daws Butler (who also voices many Hanna Barbara characters such as Yogi Bear), Dick Gautier in Tom and Jerry Kids, Maurice LaMarche in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring, Michael Donovan in Tom and Jerry Tales, (who also voices Grey Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, Guile and Zangief in Street Fighter TV series and Sabretooth in X-Men Evolution), Phil LaMarr (who also voices Wilt, Samurai Jack, and John Stewart) in some direct to video films and Rick Zieff in The Tom and Jerry Show.
In Tom and Jerry 2021, he was voiced by Bobby Cannavale, who also voiced Frankie in The Nut Job 2 Nutty by Nature, and Valiente in Ferdinand.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- Despite his abusive nature towards Tom and at times, overall xenophobic behavior towards cats in general, Spike has shown that he can be a good person deep down on multiple occasions:
- Makes peace with Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse through a treaty in "The Truce Hurts", later rescuing Tom from being eaten by an insane dog. But their peace didn't last long and later they begin to fight each other again.
- Protects Tom Cat and/or Jerry Mouse at times depending on the occasion.
- During the new 2014 series, Spike can be very supportive toward Jerry and sometimes Tom on several occasions.
- In times of crisis, Spike generally tries the hardest of Rick and Ginger's pets to keep a level head and solve whatever problem is at hand.
- Forgiving George for falsely booted Spike out after Spike was framed by Tom of eating the chicken In "Tom's Photo Finish".
- Guards an expensive diamond and faces Tin, Pan, and Alley once and for all along with his son Tyke in "Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes".
- Guards the house from Butch Cat and his friends invading it in "Scat Cats".
- He always protects his son Tyke Bulldog from danger on a daily basis and overall takes care about him. He constantly proves to be a good father to his son.
- Saves his son Tyke from being framed as a stray dog in "Give and Tyke".
- Saves Jerry and Tuffy from Meathead, and stands up against him for refusing to save him and Tom as well as making fun of them in "Cruisin' for a Brusin'".
- In certain episodes, such as "Cruising For A Bruising", "Pipeline" and "Hunger Strikes", Spike becomes the glue holding the household together.
- He also constantly gives Tom Cat a second chance in numerous occasions. When Tom, after his another conflict with Jerry, does something that Spike doesn't like (for example, does something bad to Spike's son Tyke), Spike never beats Tom immediately after catching him, but warns him that "Listen, pussycat [Later he explains the situation to Tom]. More a time I'll catch you doing you just did, I'll beat you". All the rest plot in these episodes is about Tom trying not to do something Spike told him not to do. And only after Tom, through Jerry’s fault, finally runs into this, Spike beats him. This shows that although Spike doesn't like Tom, Spike has a little bit of honor.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Unlike Tom or Jerry, he lacks significantly admirable moments. That means he fails the admirable standards to Tom and Jerry, who, with less resources, made more heroic deeds.
- Much like Tom and Jerry, he's on & off, as he can be villainous at times.
- While he can be affable to Tom and Jerry, he can also be sadistic to them, especially to Tom, as he constantly beats him, despite Tom did nothing bad to them. Spike even says he likes chasing cats. While he isn't as sadistic to Jerry like to Tom, he still can be sadistic to him too. For example, during his first appearance, he chased both Tom and Jerry, despite they both didn't do anything bad to him. In another episode, Tom, Jerry and Spike were fighting each other until Spike tried to make peace, but when they failed to share a piece of meat to each other, they began to fight again. In another episode, he met his brother, who was bullying Tom, Jerry and Nibbles, and while Spike tried to defend them, he did little to nothing to prevent his brother from abusing Tom, Jerry and Nibbles.
- He's also a bit incompetent, as he mostly fails to realize that Jerry is a provoker.
