Silas Ramsbottom is the overarching protagonist of Illumination's Despicable Me franchise.
He is the head of the Anti-Villain League who becomes an ally to Gru and Lucy Wilde. He assigns them on their mission to defeat the evil El Macho, and eventually the infamous Balthazar Bratt.
He is voiced by Steve Coogan.

His Heroic Deeds[]
- He runs the Anti-Villain League, a huge heroic organization dedicated to stopping various villains around the world and bringing them to justice, and is the one who enables the various operations to be carried out by its agents.
- He is generally respectful to Lucy and the rest of his spies.
- In Minions: The Rise of Gru, he leads the AVL in the battle against the Vicious 6, and arrests them after they are defeated by young Gru and transformed into rats.
- He advises young Gru to stay out of trouble, meaning the AVL will be spying on Gru and foreshadowing the main reason why Silas recruited Gru in Despicable Me 2.
- In Despicable Me 2, following the theft of the PX-41 serum, he dispatches Agent Lucy Wilde to bring Gru in to help with the case.
- He assigns Lucy to work as Gru's partner during the PX-41 investigation, which ultimately led to them finding out that the supervillain El Macho was the culprit and bringing him to justice after defeating him.
- While he did arrest an innocent Floyd Eaglesan after finding an empty PX-41 canister in Eaglesan's shop, that was because he didn't know that El Macho had actually framed Eaglesan for the theft, and it's likely that Eaglesan was released after Gru and Lucy exposed El Macho as the true culprit.
- In Despicable Me 3, when a ship with the Dumont Diamond is boarded by a villain, he identifies the villain to be Balthazar Bratt, judging from his shoulder pads, and orders every AVL agent in the area on the scene immediately, with Gru and Lucy arriving first although they ultimately fail to capture Bratt.
- He is called out of retirement in Despicable Me 4, to track down Maxime Le Mal who had recently escaped from the AVL prison, and relocates Gru's family to Mayflower for their own safety while the AVL focuses on capturing Maxime.
- He gives Gru and his family new identities in Mayflower to ensure their safety while in hiding.
- He transforms five of the Minions into superpowered Mega Minions in order to track down Maxime, and this pays off as while the Mega Minions were extremely incompetent at first when dropped into a city to test their abilities, they end up proving useful in defeating Maxime during the final battle when Silas called them in.
- Since the second film, he has remained supportive of Gru and his family as their benefactor and ensures their safety for the greater good.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- While he passes the baseline due to enabling the AVL's operations in stopping villains as its host and supporting Gru's family since the second film, he fails the admirable standard to Gru and Lucy, who have done many more heroic deeds themselves, and even Dru and Kevin who have performed some incredibly admirable actions with less resources than him.
- He has some jerkish moments, for example when he had a condescending nature towards Gru and insulted his Jams and Jelly business.
