“ | You're a wizard, Harry. | „ |
~ Hagrid's most famous and iconic quote, revealing Harry his origins. |
Rubeus Hagrid is a major character in the Harry Potter franchise. The gigantic gamekeeper of Hogwarts, Hagrid is Harry's first friend and the one who told him about the wizarding world. He also became a Hogwarts professor in Harry's third year for Care with Magical Creatures.
He was portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- He tried to protect his spider friend, Aragog, from being unfairly accused of being the one who killed Moaning Myrtle.
- Despite being genuinely heartbroken with Aragog's death, he never held grudges against Hogwarts and Albus Dumbledore after he was expelled. In fact, he deeply respected them both.
- When he found Sirius Black next to the scene of James and Lily's murder, he tried to comfort him.
- Brought Harry to his muggle family and was heartbroken after delivering him.
- Retrieved Harry to introduce him to the Wizarding World after the Dursleys intercepted all of his letters.
- Gave Harry a birthday cake, the first birthday present he ever got.
- Expressed remorse from giving Dudley Dursley a pig's tail.
- Bought Harry an owl.
- Got the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts for Dumbledore.
- Although he tried to persuade Harry, Ron, and Hermione to give up looking for the Stone, he wanted to ensure both the Stone's and the trio's safety.
- Took Harry back to Diagon Alley when the latter got lost in Knockturn Alley after traveling in the Floo Powder system.
- Separated Lucius Malfoy and Arthur Weasley during a fight.
- Backed up Harry's alibi against the belief that he is Slytherin's heir.
- Gave Harry and Ron a subtle hint to find Aragog while he was being taken to Azkaban.
- Felt bad for Draco after Buckbeak injured him, as despite it being Draco's fault, he should have used an easier lesson in his first class.
- Tried to defend Buckbeak from execution at all costs.
- Hinted Harry about the first task of the Triwizard tournament involving dragons.
- Asked Harry and Hermione to take care of his half-brother Grawp.
- Supported Harry in the Triwizard tournament and made him put his pride aside.
- Before the Second Wizarding War, Hagrid and Olympe Maxime both went on a mission to get the giants in the side of the Order of the Phoenix.
- Helped cease the flames at his cabin with his umbrella.
- Provided notable assistance during the Battle of Hogwarts.
- While he has some wrathfulness, such as in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when he created a pig's tail for Dudley even though he was not the one who insulted Dumbledore (although in the movie, Dudley was secretly eating Harry's birthday cake so he arguably deserved the punishment Hagrid gave him), he does feel remorse for most of his reckless actions.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Aside from some admirable actions, such as calling the giants to the war, many of his deeds are standard supportive heroism, making him fail the baseline to much.
- He fails the admirable standards of the Harry Potter franchise to students like Harry, Ron, and Hermione; with or without resources, they end up being far more proactive in their heroism than Hagrid. Not to mention Hagrid holds back on his resources, making him even more standard.
- He can sometimes be incompetent; examples include accidentally telling Quirrell how to get past Fluffy or messing up Buckbeak's defense, though this is minor given those moments do not happen frequently.
