This club is full of... incredibly cute girls!!
~ The Protagonist upon joining the Literature Club.
I gently open the door.
~ The Protagonist's final thoughts of hope before witnessing Sayori commit suicide.

The Protagonist, also known as MC and Ive (during the official trailer for Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!), is the central protagonist of the 2017 psychological horror visual novel, Doki Doki Literature Club!. The Protagonist serves one of the five members of the Literature Club, and is the sole playable character in the game. He is aliased by whatever name the player offers him, but he is a separate entity from the player themselves.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • The Protagonist is a blunt and stoic underachiever, but is truthfully a friendly and thoughtful young man who retains his promises to the end, and has access to free friendships, and he tries his best to assist other people even when he is out of his depth, such as attempting to ease Sayori's depression, despite lacking full understanding of it.
  • The Protagonist performs his best efforts to assist each club member through respective struggles and by reforming them from their corrupting factors, such as Sayori's depression, Yuri's social ineptitude and Natsuki's assertive and condescending façade. Additionally, the protagonist acts as a voice of reason for the Literature Club, similar to Sayori and Yuri, shown when he breaks up the heated argument between Natsuki and Yuri over differing poetic techniques, and reasons with them to stop the argument from going on further.
  • The Protagonist assisted Natsuki and Yuri in the festival preparations. Although while the protagonist attempted to approach Monika for the festival preparations, which was prevented due to Natsuki and Yuri's interference, the protagonist nonetheless thought that the school festival will still bet great nonetheless thanks to Monika.
  • The Protagonist does not show signs of grudge against Monika for being responsible for Sayori and Yuri's suicide, as well as the deletion of Natsuki, as well as the amount of heinous actions Monika has done in both Act 1 and 2, and outright intimidating the Protagonist in Act 3.
  • The Protagonist accepts Sayori and Yuri's confession as a potential method to soothe their feelings, even going as far as offering Sayori a soft embrace to help her reform from her depression.
  • The Protagonist has deleted Monika from the game's files at the climax of Act 3 (with even lesser resources than her), which caused Monika to feel remorseful for her heinous actions and decides to restore the entire world of DDLC with the inclusions of Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri, as well as undoing everything she did in the previous two chapters of the game. While deleting Monika can make the protagonist a bit lethal, the protagonist does not show signs of sadism within it at all. Furthermore, the protagonist can attempt to restore Monika out of sympathy, even though she prevents him from doing so due to thinking that it is not deserved.
  • Aside from being a slight jerk from the start, the Protagonist and Natsuki are the only characters in DDLC without corrupting factors.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • The Protagonist fails the admirable standards to Monika, who has redeemed herself out of villainy and restores everything in the world (resurrecting the lives of Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri, and undoing her past heinous actions in Act 1 and 2), regardless if the protagonist has less resources than Monika. Even outside of that, the Protagonist's heroism just amounts to supportive heroism and standard kindness, similar to the other club members (aside from Monika).
  • The Protagonist is insufficiently characterized (as said by Dan Salvato himself, the creator of DDLC!), as his status and attributes are both heavily dependent on the player's choice, and the protagonist himself is deliberately given minimal focus, confirmed by Dan Salvato, going as far as to state that he does not consider him an in-game character, but rather "a blank slate that says whatever is convenient."
  • The Protagonist is heavily incompetent, shown when he does not even risk his fur in saving Sayori and Yuri from suicide (even though he was aware of both of them succumbing to such, and had all opportunities to do so), and slowly losing the energy to react and stop to the ever-breaking world of DDLC as Monika tries to reach out to the player and guide them in her direction, not even preventing Monika from deleting Natsuki. However, this is only by proxy due to Monika's interference, hence the reason the protagonist is incapable of talking/reacting at certain moments in Act 2.
  • The Protagonist is introduced with a jerkish attitude right from the start of Doki Doki Literature Club!, more especially having a blunt and dismissive attitude towards Sayori and calling her an "airhead," even going as far as sleeping while participating in poetry for Sayori, only to be woken up by the latter.
