~ Offred |
Offred, known as Kate in the film adaptation, is the main protagonist of the The Handmaid's Tale novel duology.
She is a woman who lived in the totalitarian Regime of Gilead, forced to become a "Handmaid", a breeding slave that is forced to get pregnant and carry the child of a Commander and his wife Serena Joy. She has given up and become apathetic due to the loss of her husband and child, although after becoming pregnant again due to a secret relationship with a driver named Nick, she once again desires to escape Gilead and get her baby to safety.
In the 1990 film adaptation she was portrayed by Natasha Richardson.
Her Good Ranking[]
Her Heroic Deeds[]
- She and her husband Luke tried to her daughter out of Gilead during the initial stages of the regime.
- After learning her walking partner Ofglen is a member of Mayday, the Gilead resistance group, Offred begins feeding her intel and working with her in small ways to fight against the government.
- Once she gets pregnant by Nick, she works to get her unborn baby out of Gilead and is possibly successful if Agnes from the sequel novel The Testaments is indeed her child.
- Her film counterpart Kate kills the Commander, therefore getting justice for all the harm he has done as a government member of Gilead.
Why Doesn't She Stand Out?[]
- Her heroic deeds do not pass the baseline, after her primary heroic deed is getting her unborn baby out of Gilead, and it's ultimately ambiguous as to whether she even succeeded.
- She fails the admirable standards to Ofglen, a Handmaid who worked with Mayday significantly more than Offred with arguably less resources, who also does not meet the baseline.
- Her apathetic nature due to the loss of her family causes her to be more of a narrator than hero at times, such as when Ofglen gives her updates on Mayday but Offred is too focused on her relationship with Nick to listen or even care.
