Muriel Bagge is the deuteragonist of Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog. She is the wife of the grumpy, spiteful, Eustace Bagge and they are the owners of the titular character in the show. She is a kind, docile old woman who cares about her family and is often the damsel in distress who's put in danger by various villains. Muriel lives on a farm in Nowhere, Kansas.

She was voiced by the late Thea White.

She has adopted Courage when she found him in the dumpster after his parents were unwillingly sent off into space by a cruel veterinarian, since Courage, who was a puppy at the time, couldn't fend for himself and needs someone to care for him.
Muriel has often stood up to her husband whenever he scared and abused Courage, when Courage hasn't done anything to warrant it.
She assists Courage in defeating various enemies.
She takes good care of her family and is often willing to forgive other people for their misdeeds.
She is genuinely welcoming and friendly to others including strangers. For example, being friendly to the Hunchback of Nowhere.
Muriel is willing to take care of her family by preparing food and doing chores out of her own kindness.
She is willing to be forgiving and lenient to Eustace, despite the latter's attitudes.
She lacks corrupting qualities such as envy, rage, and apathy that her husband has often scolding him for acting like that.

Why Doesn't She Stand Out?[]

Muriel fails the standard heavily as she was the generic damsel in distress when compared to Courage, who did so much for the family and fought many villains including the Pure Evil villain, Katz despite his cowardly nature. While Courage has more resources, he mostly holds back his resources as he was able to stop Katz from killing dozens of people with arguably no resources. Not to mention he was able to save his owners most of the time without his strength.
It is unknown if she was the reason why Courage is the hero as she only adopted Courage because of his courage which to the point revealed Courage actually have some bravery that makes him the hero but it's only implied as it is possible she only adopted him for being a brave dog rather than being an actual hero while also making it unknown if she was the reason why Courage save the events of the series making it rely on fridge-brilliance.

Trivia[]

Muriel was originally a Pure Good hero for her kind and loving nature for Courage, but as the admirable standards for heroes have changed over time, Muriel is eventually rejected from PG as what she does in terms of heroism is bog-standard whereas Courage has surpassed those standards by a long shot.
