Mermaid Man is one of the recurring characters in the SpongeBob SquarePants series. He is one of SpongeBob and Patrick's favorite TV show characters in the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Since reaching old age, he and Barnacle Boy are semi-retired from the series and live in Shady Shoals as part of their retirement, but they sometimes get back into action when duty calls.
He was voiced by the late Ernest Borgnine.

- He laid waste to the plans of various villains and saved Bikini Bottom many times, including when he and Barnacle Boy imprisoned Man Ray and froze him into the Tartar Sauce, which contributed to Bikini Bottom's safety. Shown when SpongeBob and Patrick went to the past and Patrick ate the Tartar Sauce, Man Ray became the ruthless ruler of the Bikini Bottom and enslaved everybody.
- When Barnacle Boy became evil, he went out to defeat Man Ray and The Dirty Bubble and managed to bring him back on the good side.
- He, along with the Bikini Bottomites, stopped Plankton's evil plan, and demolished the Shelly Highway, which would have destroyed Bikini Bottom.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Mermaid Man fails the admirable standards to both SpongeBob and Patrick Star, who have been noted to have saved Bikini Bottom multiple times per se, and actively cleared Mr. Krabs' name when he was framed for stealing King Neptune's crown, Princess Mindy, who had a major role in stopping of Plankton and even Squidward Tentacles, who fails the Standard himself and yet did more good things on-screen. While it is stated he do a lot more most of Mermaid Man’s acts suffer offscreen heroism horribly making him rely on fridge-brilliance.
- Some of his actions on screen are too indirectly admirable as he ultimately does nothing apart from support the heroes in defeating Man Ray and saving Bikini Bottom. However in addition to proving her everlasting loyalty to Barnacle Boy, he was genuinely horrified by his descent into villainy, making it a minor prevention.
- He has several moments of being arrogant and a jerk at times, such as treating Barnacle Boy as a child in the fifth MM&BB episode. However it is due to his mental decline because his age making it a minor prevention.
