“ | You need to grow up. Things are different now. Your people look at me like I'm the devil. Grabbing up those love birds like that, huh? Now y'all wanna do the same damn thing I did, snatch someone up and deliver them to the Governor. Just like me. People do what they gotta do or they die. | „ |

Merle Dixon is a major character from AMC's The Walking Dead. He is the older brother of Daryl Dixon.
While Merle is initially introduced as a member of the Atlanta survivor group in Season 1, he is left handcuffed on a rooftop during a supply run and later presumed dead. However, he reemerges in Season 3 as a high-ranking member of the Governor’s militia in Woodbury, having survived by amputating his own hand.
He was portrayed by Michael Rooker.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
In General[]
- Despite his abrasive and cold attitude toward him, Merle loved his brother Daryl and was very protective of him. When he found out about the abuse Daryl endured from their father, he was horrified.
- He genuinely cared for the residents of Woodbury, even having a moral code to never let one of them turn into a walker if they died.
- After reuniting with Rick's group, despite showing some animosity toward them, he eventually grew to respect Rick and Hershel as leaders.
Season 3[]
- He shows distain at the Governor for sexually assaulting Maggie.
- He comforts Andrea over her sister's death, stating she was a good kid.
- Despite learning that Andrea had been sent as a spy by Rick's group, he doesn't kill her. Instead, he offers to either help her leave and never come back, or remain in Woodbury permanently.
- After kidnapping Michonne, he sincerely apologizes for shooting her.
- When Michonne is about to be eaten by walkers, he jumps in and rescues her.
- He ultimately redeems himself by helping Rick and his group defeat the Governor's forces and sacrificing himself while attempting to kill the Governor.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He fails the admirable standards of the series to Glenn, T-Dog, and Tyreese, all of whom committed far more heroic/admirable acts with equal or less resources.
- He's extremely hot-headed, aggressive, and prone to violence. He's also extremely lethal, having killed 29 people under the Governor's orders with no hesitation.
- He also never shows remorse for the people he killed or the other heinous acts he committed while working for the Governor.
- He is a xenophobe and racist. According to Daryl, he was formerly part of a group of skinheads (nazis), and he frequently makes racially insensitive comments and remarks, such as calling T-Dog the N-Word, Glenn a variety of Asian-related derogatory terms, making fun of Gargulio's name, confusing Glenn for being Chinese instead of Korean and not caring to correct himself, etc.
- However, he does slightly subvert this. Even before he redeemed himself and betrayed the Governor, he formed a semi-friendship with Michonne, despite her being a black woman, even going so far as to risk his life for her. He also becomes more open-minded and learns to tolerate Glenn, despite the latter's hatred toward him.
