“ | If you want to use your Gift without cutting then you need to find a trigger, a memory... a feeling. One that hurts worse than any knife. | „ |
~ M.K. |
M.K. is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside The Widow) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is a Dark One, meaning he possesses the Gift, supernatural dark chi abilities that greatly enhance his fighting abilities. He was found by Sunny and trained in both martial arts and how to control the Gift. He desires to find the legendary city of Azra, a place where Dark Ones would be safe from the rest of the world. Due to having multiple parties attempt to use his Gift for their own means, M.K. eventually becomes a villainous character and joins Pilgrim in his conquest for the Badlands.
He was portrayed by Aramis Knight.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- After being separated from his mother, he dedicates himself to finding her. After he unlocks the buried memory of Sunny killing her, he desires to kill Sunny and avenge her.
- He refuses to go along with anyone attempting to use his Gift for their own power, such as the Widow, who repeatedly attempts to manipulate M.K. over the course of the series without success.
- With Sunny's training, he begins attempting to control his Gift. When Tilda, a girl he develops a romance with accidentally activates his Gift, M.K. manages to stop himself from hurting her and turn his Gift off.
- When Tilda is captured by Sunny due to her being the Widow's adopted daughter, he is ordered to torture her for information by Baron Quinn. While Sunny is reluctant to do so, M.K. outright demands that Sunny not do it, as he doesn't want to see her get hurt.
- When the Widow arrives to save Tilda and begins fighting Sunny, another Colt named Bale attempts to kill Tilda due to her previously biting off his ear during a fight. When Bale is about to beat her to death, M.K. intentionally cuts himself to activate his Gift and save her.
- After being taken to the Abbot Monastery to be trained by the Master on how to control his Gift, he once again refuses to let someone use his Gift for their own gains and flees with Ava, an Abbot who served as his mentor.
- M.K. helps to break Ava out of the Master's brainwashing, telling her of the lost city of Azra, a place where Dark Ones would be safe from the rest of the world, and together they find proof of its existence.
- After Sunny is put into a coma by an Abbot named Cyan, M.K. decides to risk it all and go back to the Abbot Monastery to find a cure.
- Even after becoming a villainous character and joining Pilgrim, he is still kind to his allies and helps another Dark One named Nix to control her Gift.
- During the attack on the Abbot Monastery he and Pilgrim wake all of the Dark Ones that the Master forcefully put into a coma.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He doesn't meet the admirable standards of other characters in the series, such as Sunny or Bajie who both actively are trying to save the world with less resources due to them not possessing the Gift.
- He becomes a villainous character in the second half of the series, and while his character is tragic, he is extremely violent and often tries to kill innocent people or anyone who does not
- He is lethal even during his time as a heroic character, such as when he murders Baron Jacobee and Zypher.
- After finally uncovering the buried memory of Sunny killing his mother and wanting to go after him is understandable, Nix points out that it is extremely hypocritical because M.K. is also a remorseless killer by the time he is pursuing Sunny for revenge, and both Pilgrim and Nix herself have killed several people who likely also had children.
- After Nix eventually abandons Pilgrim and his followers, M.K. attempts to kill her immediately.
- While him and Pilgrim saving the sleeping Dark Ones from the Master was a heroic act, they end up taking things too far by killing all of the Abbots and the Master herself, as well as going on to brainwash all of the novices and awoken Dark Ones in order to make them fanatical followers of Pilgrim's mission.
- After having his face burned during battle, he becomes nearly completely villainous, with only his love for Tilda remaining. He states that even his mother was weak, and that he was not going to be like her.
- His final act in the series is to fight the Widow, Gaius Chau, and Tilda to stop them from destroying a device called the Meridian Chamber, which could grant and revoke the Gift from anyone.
- During the final confrontation he angrily states that those with power are meant to rule, showing he now believes himself to be above others due to his Gift.
- While he tries not to harm Tilda during their battle, he is fully willing to kill the Widow despite knowing that she is pregnant. He ends up accidentally stabbing Tilda in the stomach, possibly killing her.
