~ King Hubert to his son, Prince Phillip |
King Hubert is a supporting character in Disney's 16th full-length animated movie of 1959, Sleeping Beauty. As the father of Prince Phillip, he is the jolly ruler of a neighboring kingdom and the best friend of Aurora's debonair father, King Stefan.
In the original film, he was modeled by the late Don Barclay and was voiced by the late Bill Thompson, who previously voiced Jock in Lady and the Tramp. In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, he was voiced by Jeff Bennett, who also voices Lord Duke in the same film, as well as Geppetto and as both Trusty and Jock in Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure. In Maleficent II: Mistress of Evil, he was renamed to King John, being portrayed by Robert Lindsay.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- He is a jolly ruler of his kingdom, a loving father to Prince Phillip and is best friends with King Stefan.
- He plans to have his son, Prince Phillip marry Stefan's daughter, Aurora in order to unite their kingdoms, due to them being best friends.
- During the await for Princess Aurora, Hubert summons Sir Minstrel to serve wine to him and Stefan.
- His sleepy conversation with King Stefan help the Fairies realize that the man Aurora had previously met in the woods was really Prince Phillip.
- He, along with Stefan and Leah, reunited with Phillip and Aurora.
- In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, he, along with King Stefan, Queen Leah, Prince Phillip, Lord Duke, and the Three Good Fairies attend Aurora’s royal banquet for their return from having a royal conference at Hubert’s kingdom.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Like Aurora and Stefan, Hubert is unable to pass the baseline for several reasons.
- He heavily fails the admirable standards severely to the Three Fairies and his son (who all performed more heroic actions by defeating Maleficent in order to wake up Hubert, Aurora, Stefan, Leah, and the rest of the kingdom residents from their sleeping curse), as he spends the entire film basically questioning with Stefan about their proposals of their children's future marriage.
- This is not helped that he also got put under a sleeping spell by the fairies until the end of the film.
- While it is true he wanted to have his and Stefan’s kingdoms peacefully united, Hubert’s actions onscreen still counts as generic support.
- Overall, he is just a generic caring ruler whose heroic deeds can never go beyond the baseline, making him too bog-standard.

- Despite being a loving and jolly father, he is still very prone to being a temperamental, stubborn, grumpy, and argumentative king, which is far too corrupting for him to be approved as PG or NPG.
- Like Stefan, Hubert is often prone to anger outbursts, as shown when he got angry at Stefan for the thought of Phillip not being good enough for Aurora, culminating with his brief fight with Stefan, and when his plans have been ignored or dismissed when hearing that Phillip intends to marry the girl he met.
- He initially objected Phillip's plan to marry a peasant girl, though he later respected his son's wish to marry her, though neither he nor Phillip knew that Aurora is the same peasant and betrothed until later when Phillip saves him, Stefan, Leah, Aurora and the other kingdom residents from their slumber.
- Like Stefan, he is sometimes stubborn, rude, and grumpy at times, as shown when he gets into an argument and a brawl with Stefan about the future of their children and their kingdoms, which Hubert pushed Stefan twice and mistakenly grabbing a dead fish as his weapon to attack Stefan, who was using a plate as a shield.
- While his attempt to attack Stefan proved unsuccessful, this is still considered a lethal act that neither he or Stefan fully apologized for trying to declare war on each other.
- Nevertheless, since both of them still quickly made their amends by realizing they’re just fighting over nothing, this is considered a slightly minor prevention.
