Well, I guess I gave her the wrong tea.
~ King Harold telling Fairy Godmother that he gave Fiona normal tea on purpose.

King Harold is the overarching protagonist of the Shrek franchise.

He was the late king of Far Far Away, being the husband of Queen Lillian, the father of Princess Fiona and the father-in-law of Shrek. While he initially resents his son-in-law for being an ogre, he went on to warm up to him.

He is voiced by John Cleese.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • When the Fairy Godmother proposes the idea of drugging his daughter Princess Fiona with a love potion so that she'd fall in love with the Godmother's son Prince Charming instead of her husband Shrek, Harold is quick to object to this plan. While the Godmother initially succeeds in getting him to spike her tea with the potion, he immediately gets cold feet after hearing Fiona profess her love for Shrek and prevents her from drinking at the last second.
  • When the Fairy Godmother tries to kill Shrek after heer plans are thwarted, he throws himself between her and the ogre as she fires a magical beam at him, with it ricocheting off his armor and killing her, in turn this resulted in him being turned back into a frog.
  • He apologizes to Shrek for his prejudice against him and gave his marriage with Fiona his blessing.
  • In his dying moments, he told Shrek about his heir Arthur so that he could bring him to Far Far Away and preserve his bloodline.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • He fails the Admirable Standard to Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots, who all commit more heroic deeds with less resources.
    • What’s more is his act in defeating the Fairy Godmother is shared with the other characters.
  • He initially sent Puss to assassinate Shrek per the Fairy Godmother's request.
    • While this attempt proved unsuccessful and Harold did grow to appreciate his son-in-law, this is still a very lethal act that he didn't even apologize for. Nevertheless, he was still remorseful for it, so this is a minor prevention.
  • He made some questionable, if well-meaning attempts to undo Fiona's curse, such as imprisoning her in a tower for several years to be rescued by Prince Charming and almost selling his kingdom to Rumpelstiltskin in the hopes of curing her.
  • He caused the whole conflict of the second movie by summoning Shrek and Fiona to Far Far Away, indirectly putting their relationship in jeopardy until later at the end.
