“ | You got the makings of greatness in ya, but you gotta take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls. And when the time comes, you'll get the chance to really test the cut of your sails and show what you're made of. Well, I hope I'm there, catching some of the light coming off you that day. | „ |
~ John Silver's most famous quote. |
John Silver is the main antagonist of Disney's 2002 feature film Treasure Planet.
He is the the captain of a crew of alien pirates who desires to search for Treasure Planet to achieve wealth. Although Silver shows himself to be ruthless and greedy, attempting to dispose of anyone who gets in the way of his plans, he appears to have a soft side towards John Hawkins, forming an unexpected father-son type of bond with him. Thanks to Hawkin's influence, Silver was eventually able to redeem himself. He was voiced by the late Brian Murray. In the Japanese dub from the movie, he was voiced by the late Genzō Wakayama.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- Even before his redemption he shows affability towards Jim and avoids unnecessary cruelty.
- When Scroop kills Mr. Arrow, John is angry and starts beating and threatening Scroop.
- While he does tell the crew that he cozied up to Jim to ensure he doesn't discover their true plans and wants nothing to do with him, it's done with good intentions as the crew would have likely attacked them both if he didn't do this act.
- He becomes a father-figure to Jim. He even decides to save Jim's life and not gold and shares it with Jim.
- He redeems himself.
- He assigns Morph to watch over Jim on his behalf, showing he cares about him.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He doesn't commit any significant actions that could be considered a goodness zone crossing. While he does save Jim, this isn't enough to pass the baseline. This means he fails the admirable standards to Jim Hawkins, Captain Amelia and Delbert Doppler, who saved the crew twice with less resources.
- In fact, he arguably even fails the standards to B.E.N., who timed every second until Treasure Planet's destruction.
- Silver's resources don't help anything, as he has a cybernetic arm and a crew of pirates at his disposal.
- Despite redeeming himself, it is never shown he completely subverted his villainous side. For example, he escaped from being arrested, which means he's still a pirate.
