I don't have anything. You have a reason to leave this place. But I don't. Since you asked me... I've been thinking about what I'd do once I get out. But no matter how much I think, I can't think of one. Someone with a good reason should be the one to leave. That's the right thing. Make sure you leave this place alive. And... meet your mom. Get your brother back. And go to Jeju Island too.
~ Ji-yeong to Kang Sae-byeok during the Mables game.

Ji-yeong (Korean: 지영), also referred to as Player 240, is a supporting character in the first season of the Netflix show Squid Game. She is one of the contestants in the Squid Game and becomes close friends with Kang Sae-byeok.

She was portrayed by Lee Yoo-mi.

Her Good Ranking[]

Her Heroic Deeds[]

  • Although she killed her father, it was because he had just killed her mother, in addition to being a very abusive man to both her and her mother, including he might have sexually harassed his own daughter. In other words, it was an act of self-defense.
  • When she thought Sang-woo didn't want her on their team, she didn't insist on it and told the group that she would leave.
  • Although she criticized and initially even mocked Player 244's religion, it was mostly to point out his hypocrisy as he would be happy with the death of others and even suggest their group to attack weaker players despite following a religion that preaches compassion and peace.
    • 244 also reminded her of her father, who was very religious but at the same time would abuse both her and her mother, so interacting with 244 certainly triggered bad memories. Her nihilistic view is due to her tragic and sympathetic backstory of what her father did to her, and Player 244 reminded her of him, so it's understandable.
    • In her first interaction with 244, despite her mockery of 244 seeming gratuitous, their team actually had just killed a team of 10 people to survive in the Tug-of-War game, the entire team was shocked and/or guilty (like Gi-hun) but 244 started praying to thank God for "killing/sacrificing their adversaries". Ji-yeong makes a good point that not only he should be thanking Sang-woo and Il-nam instead but also questions him about him being absolved of the killing just by praying. This parallels Ji-yeong's father, who would always pray to ask for forgiveness after abusing her and her mother.
    • She also points out 244's sexism when he uses his religion to justify thinking that men are superior to women while he explains why women shouldn't be chosen as partners in the fourth game (which differs from Sang-woo and Player 196, as they didn't want to team up with women for pragmatic reasons).
  • She helped her team set up a barricade to protect themselves in case Deok-su's gang tried to start another riot.
  • She gets to know and make friends with Kang Sae-byeok during the games.
  • She purposefully loses the Marbles game, so that Sae-byeok would win, thus sacrificing herself for her to live.
    • Her sacrifice also led to Sae-byeok telling Gi-hun about her brother while she was dying, thus letting Gi-hun rescue him from the orphanage and letting Sang-woo's mother adopt him.
  • Along with Ali, she's one of the most good, incorruptible and innocent characters in the series so far.

Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • She massively fails the standards compared to Seong Gi-hun (who in Season 2, he returned to the games and helped hundreds of players get through "Red Light Green Light"), Ali Abdul (who lacked any corrupting factors and saved Gi-hun during the first game) and Cho Sang-woo (who saved his entire team in the Tug-of-War game). Her most admirable deed was sacrificing herself, and while it makes her pass the baseline, it was common in the show, making her not stand out.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, in All Of Us Are Dead, Lee Yoo-mi also portrays Lee Na-yeon, who is considered a Villainous Benchmark.
