I guess there's only room for one hero in this family.

I've come for you, Ross.
~ Jack confronting Edgar Ross.

John "Jack" Marston, Jr. is the deuteragonist of the 2010 action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption and a major character in its 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption 2.

He is the son of former outlaws John Marston and Abigail Roberts, born into the Van der Linde Gang in 1895. As a child, Jack was innocent and sheltered, largely kept away from the gang’s violent lifestyle by his parents and other gang members like Arthur Morgan, who show him affection and protectiveness. After the gang disbands, Jack flees with Abigail and others, growing up in hiding.

After John is forced back into government service and ultimately betrayed and killed by federal agents, Jack is left to bury his father alongside his mother and Uncle. Abigail later dies off-screen, leaving Jack alone. By 1914, Jack has become a hardened young man, trained in survival and gunfighting.

He was portrayed by Marissa Buccianti as a child and Ted Sutherland as a pre-teen. As an adult, he was portrayed by Josh Blaylock.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

  • When John returns home, he apologizes for not being able to keep the ranch running.
  • He helps take care of the cattle, hunting, and defending livestock from predators.
  • Hunted down a grizzly bear by himself to prove his worth to his father.
  • When the U.S. Army and Bureau agents attack, he steps up to fight alongside John and Uncle.
  • After John sacrifices himself to save his family, he supports his grieving mother, helping to bury both his father and Uncle.
  • In 1914, when he tracks down and duels Edgar Ross, the man who orchestrated John’s murder.
    • He calls Ross out not just for the killing, but for using his father to do the government's dirty work.
    • In a lawful world full of corruption, Jack delivers the justice his father never got.
    • After killing Ross, Jack doesn't celebrate—he looks at his gun somberly, aware that in seeking justice, he has also embraced the outlaw life he was raised to avoid.
  • In free roam, he can hunt down and kill criminals to collect bounties.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • Although he passes the baseline for avenging John's death and killing the corrupt Edgar Ross, he still fails the incredibly high admirable standards of the franchise.
  • He is an anti-hero, as his most admirable act of killing Ross was motivated by revenge.
  • He can be a massive jerk, not just to his late parents and members of the Van der Linde gang as a child, but even to strangers and random NPCs as an adult.
  • In free roam, he can commit many morally-dubious acts, including robbing, killing innocent civilians, and being a public menace.

Trivia[]

  • In the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V, also developed by Rockstar Games, there's an easter egg referencing Jack Marston in protagonist Franklin Clinton's second house. On one of his shelves, there's a book titled Red Dead credited to an author named J. Marston. This implies that after avenging his father by killing Ross, Jack gave up his dream of becoming a gunslinger and became an author instead. If this is the case, it makes him even more admirable for breaking the cycle of crime and violence in his life.
