Heroic Benchmark Wiki

What you just saw... That is your legacy, Stark. Your life's work in the hands of those murderers. Is that how you want to go out? Is this the last act of defiance of the great Tony Stark? Or are you going to do something about it?
~ Ho Yinsen to Tony Stark.
Don't waste it. Don't waste your life.
~ Ho Yinsen to Tony Stark, his last words.

Ho Yinsen is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Howard Stark) of the Iron Man trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yinsen was a brilliant doctor who was kidnapped by the Ten Rings, a terrorist organization under the leadership of the Mandarian, who forced him to save Tony Stark's life so he could build missiles for them. Yinsen assisted Stark in creating his first suit of armor to escape, and willingly sacrificed himself so Tony could live. Stark would take Yinsen's advice to heart, becoming a superhero to protect the world from threats.

He is portrayed by Shaun Toub.

His Good Ranking[]

His Heroic Deeds[]

In General[]

  • Despite his minimal screentime, Yinsen, like Nick Fury, had a major impact in establishing the MCU Infinity Saga as he played a direct role in inspiring Tony Stark to become Iron Man; thus, he was posthumously responsible for all of Tony's heroic actions including mentoring Peter Parker and sacrificing himself to save the universe from Thanos.
  • Unlike Tony, he never had any corrupting factors.

Background[]

  • He became a doctor to save lives in England after graduating as an accomplished engineer and physician.
  • He was excited upon first meeting Tony Stark at a New Year's Eve party in Switzerland 2000 and wanted to work with him.
    • Unlike Aldrich Killian, he never held a grudge against Tony for ditching him at the party and even hoped they meet again someday.

Iron Man[]

  • After being captured by the Ten Rings, he saved Tony's life from a terrorist attack in Gulmira by implanting an Arc Reactor in his chest to keep the shrapnel from entering his heart.
  • When Tony was given the choice between building a missile for the Ten Rings or dying, Yinsen helped him build his first Iron Man suit.
  • He sacrificed his life by charging against the Ten Rings to buy time for Tony's suit to fully charge so he can escape the cave, getting himself killed in the process.
  • As he was dying from multiple gunshots, he assured Tony he wanted to die to reunite with his family and encouraged him not to waste his life and make the best of it.
  • Despite his death, he posthumously inspired Tony to become Iron Man and join the Avengers. Tony would even put an end to the Ten Rings' reign of terror in Gulmira, avenging Yinsen's death.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • While he definitely passes the general baseline for causing Tony to become Iron Man and all his heroic actions, he still fails the astronomically high Admirable Standards of the MCU. While it would be unfair to compare him to Tony, he still fails it to Tony's father Howard Stark, who had an even bigger role in inspiring Tony and founded S.H.I.E.L.D and Stark Industries with similar resources to Yinsen's.
