Gwimbly is the titular character in the Smiling Friends episode "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)".
He is the retired video game star and protagonist of his own franchise, as well as the former mascot of Insane Groundbreaking Games. After his series got cancelled, became homeless and destitute. He eventually comes across Pim, a fan of his video game series, who decides to help him get back into the spotlight.
He is voiced by series co-creator Zach Hadel.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
- As the protagonist of the Gwimbly series, he fights against the brutish and tyrannical Count Groxia and retrieves creamed corn.
- He served as a role model to his fans, Pim in particular saying he played a big role in his childhood.
- He quickly forgave Allan for spraying him with dirty water, and also forgave Troglor who tried to kill him.
- He stood up to the malevolent IGBG CEO after he was humiliated, even saying that he will kill him if he could, and had to be restrained.
- He cares deeply for his deceased sidekick Mr. Millipede, and even considers himself friends with Count Groxia outside of work.
- He eventually learns not to dwell on the past and stars in a new platformer-style fighting game.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- He fails the admirable standards of Smiling Friends to each member of the titular organization, such as Allan (saving the city from Mr. Landlord), Charlie (saving lives in the Enchanted Forest), Mr. Boss (stopping the Frowning Friends and their genocide) and Pim (helping many people improve their lives and stopping Oscar's tyranny). While he does fight against Count Groxia in the game and is implied to have defeated him many times, it is unclear what threat his archenemy posed exactly and how heinous he is, so he suffers from Fridge Brilliance.
- He can be a bit of jerk, as he spit on Allan in retaliation and cursed out his old company, albeit both for fair reasons.
- He is lethal and wrathful, as he was prepared to kill his former CEO over mere humiliation
Trivia[]
- Gwimbly is a clear reference to platformer video game protagonists from the early 3D era, such as Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Banjo. The fact his series was eventually sidelined by its company is a riff on how many of these franchises ended up forgotten by their own companies in spite of their prior success.
