Gloria the Hippopotamus is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Melman) of the Madagascar franchise.
She is a hippopotamus, who resided in the Central Park Zoo as an attraction, all the while being good friends with Alex, Marty, and Melman. She is the only female of the quartet.
She is voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith.

- When Marty was feeling upset about wanting to go to the wild. She encouraged Alex to go over, and give him a little pep talk.
- After Marty escaped from the zoo, which was a big mistake, she, Alex, and Melman went to go bring him back to the zoo being out in the city.
- When she, Alex, Marty, and Melman were trapped on the island of Madagascar. She put in efforts to get the people to find them and bring them back to the Central Park Zoo.
- Calmed Mort down after Alex unintentionally scared him.
- Helped fight off the foosas chasing after Marty being hungry to eat by sitting on a few of them.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa[]
- With her friends rode in the old plane flying back home to New York City, but when it crashed, she along Alex, Marty, and Melman made the best of visiting the reserve, which Alex reunited with his parents.
- After Melman gave a heartwarming speech about how he truly feels about her. She realized that he was the right one for her and saved the giraffe about to sacrifice himself from King Julien's idea.
- Called the penguins out on an important mission to rescue Alex from the people of New York City about to have him for dinner with Nana leading the group of survivors.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted[]
- Went all the way to Monte Carlo with Alex, Marty, Melman, and the lemurs to get the penguins to take them home to Central Park Zoo, even escaping from Chantel Dubois.
- Told the circus animals to let them on the moving train when the police were surrounding the area.
- Made a great time joining the circus and helped Melman learn how to dance on a tightrope.
- Even if she with her friends lied about being circus animals. It was only because they had to.
- Successfully ran away living with the circus after Chantel Dubois was defeated, and found a home alongside her friends, instead of being a zoo animal like when she wanted to go back to before.
Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While she passes the baseline for helping her friends and saving Melman from his sacrifice in the volcano, she fails the admirable standards of the Madagascar franchise to the penguins like Skipper, Kowalski, and Private who have taken a big part in stopping most of the threats to the main zoo animals, making her heroism rather standard compared to their heroic acts throughout the series. She even fails the admirable standards of Madagascar to Alex The Lion who defeated the fossas off their territory to save her, Marty, and Melman, attempted in defeating Nana, Makunga, and stopped Chantel DuBois animal killing spree once, and for all.
- Although she has her reasons, she can be rather arrogant from time to time.
