“ | I think you're wrong, by the way. I highly doubt you're in the same place you started. I-I mean, yeah, you guys have been getting your asses kicked, some of that my fault, but, like, you're at war. You're gonna take hits. ~ Emerald's redemption. |
Emerald Sustrai is a major character and former antagonist from the American animated webseries RWBY. She is a thief who dedicated herself to Cinder Fall after being rescued by her and was a servant of the villainous Salem. However, after seeing the pain and destruction Salem brought upon the world and Cinder's apparent disinterest in her, Emerald began a slow path to redemption, allying herself with her former enemies Team RWBY in order to put an end to Salem's destructive conquest.
She is voiced by Katie Newville in English and Marina Inoue in Japanese.
Her Good Ranking[]
Her Heroic Deeds[]
- After realising that she has gone too far, she redeems herself and sides with the heroes.
- She helps the heroes to come up with a plan to subdue Ironwood and get Penny to the Vault of the Winter Maiden, and Emerald joins in.
- She uses her Semblance to assist the heroes in ambushing Ironwood to subdue him while Team RWBY and Penny go to the Vault and call upon the Spirit in the Relic of Creation, Ambrosius, for aid in evacuating Mantle and Atlas.
- She helps Jaune to lead the people out into Vacuo, but enters in a sandstorm.
- She fights back several Grimm.
Why Doesn't She Stand Out?[]
- She fails the high admirable standards of RWBY too much. Although she has considerably less resources than Pyrrha and James (who are Pure Good and Inconsistently Admirable respectively), she fails the standards to Jaune, who has fought against Cinder multiple times and helped Team RWBY to defeat the Curious Cat.
- Additionally, while it would be unfair to compare her to Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, Emerald fails to Oscar, who stood up to Hazel and defeated him when he wouldn't stop torturing him with the intention of avenging his sister.
- She doesn't have enough screentime to perform sufficiently admirable deeds, as she spends most of the series as a villain who works for Cinder and actively carries out plans for her. This is partially the reason why she fails the admirable standards of RWBY.
- Even after her redemption, she never really subverts her cocky, arrogant and jerkish tendencies, and she is still prone to being rude to others if she needs to. This means she is too mean-spirited to be PG or NPG.
- It is implied that she was rude to her mother or caretaker, which led to Emerald getting kicked out of her own family.
- She barely shows remorse for her villainy and takes great pleasure in reminding herself of how evil she used to be.
- She is rather lethal at times.
- She has moments of being too mischievous and cheeky.
Trivia[]
- While Emerald is currently a Heroic Benchmark, this could change in a later volume of RWBY as she is no longer friends with Cinder and will likely assist Team RWBY and their friends in committing many heroic acts. Should she pass the admirable standards, Emerald will easily become Inconsistently Admirable.
