Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, later known as Doctor Octopus, is a major character in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Initially, he was a benevolent scientist who sought to create a fusion reactor for his project, until he descended to his villainy. However, he managed to subvert those qualities by the ending of the film, while he also played a major role in stopping the threats presented by the Green Goblin and the remaining villains when he returned.
He is portrayed by Alfred Molina.
His Good Ranking[]
His Heroic Deeds[]
In General[]
- He dedicated his life to helping people through science out of the goodness of his heart.
- Upon becoming Doctor Octopus, he deep down sincerely didn't want to hurt anyone, but was forced to because he was under the control of his own arms.
- He cared about those who are close to him as he would put his life on the line to ensure their safety first.
- Although he was under the control of his arms and made him dangerous to those around him, he still showed some parts of his true self.
[]
- He didn't hold grudges against those who wrong him and was quick to forgive them, even when he was under the control of his arms.
- When Harry Osborn visited him with his best friend Peter Parker, he assured him that he wasn't doing the experiment for fame and money.
- He gave Peter advice about using intelligence for the good of humanity, even though he just met him and brushed him off at first.
- He warned Peter that keeping emotions, such as love, inside himself could make him sick, this advice partially motivating him to try and work through his feelings for Mary Jane Watson.
- Despite not doing any of it intentionally, he felt extreme guilt for the actions that cost him his reputation as a scientist and the death of his wife, as well as for the deaths of the surgeons who were operating on him when his arms killed them all while he was unconscious, and wanted to prevent his arms from hurting anyone else. He even commented that he deserved to die for what his tentacles did.
- He tried to fight the A.I. influences of his arms as he admitted that Peter was right about miscalculating his experiment and refused to rob a bank, before he succumbed to his arms' will.
- Although he threatened to drop him off the building of his house when the latter insulted him and refused to cooperate with him, he reasonably made a deal with Harry by bringing him Spider-Man and not to hurt Peter in exchange for more tritium that fueled his experiment.
- After battling Spider-Man, he brought him to Harry as promised before getting the tritium he needed for his experiment.
- Upon realizing that Spider-Man and Peter were the same person, he smiled with pride and came to respect him for using his good quality to help people in need.
Spider-Man: No Way Home[]
- Despite fighting what he believed was his Peter Parker and before he saw him without his mask, he showed respect for the MCU's Spider-Man as he commented on his nanotech suit and the features that came with it.
- Although he was annoyed with Spider-Man's younger counterpart because he took control of his arms through a Bluetooth connection when he stole some of the nanites from his nanotech suit, he warned the MCU's Peter about going after the Green Goblin, who he believed died during his final battle against their universe's Spider-Man.
- Despite being angry and paranoid when Doctor Strange explained his intentions to send everyone back to their universes, he stood up for the group, even though he just met the other villains, except Norman Osborn, as he asked him if they were going to die once they return to their worlds.
- He was polite to the MCU's May Parker, Spider-Man's aunt, as he accepted her offer of something to drink.
- After having a new chip installed in the back of his neck and being set free from his arms' control, he returned the nanites that he stole back to the MCU's Peter and thanked him for saving him from being enslaved by his own creation.
- He offered his help to the MCU's Peter and Norman in curing the rest of the villains, especially his closest friend and fellow scientist.
- He assisted the MCU's Peter in looking around Happy Hogan's apartment for danger, after Spider-Man's spider sense was set off.
- He stayed loyal to the MCU's Parkers when the Green Goblin took control over Norman's mind and convinced the rest of the villains to turn against them.
- He tried to reach out to Norman, which showed that he became sympathetic with his friend in his own issues and not only understood that his actions as the Green Goblin wasn't his fault but also didn't want to hurt anyone.
- After witnessing Electro taking the Arc Reactor from the Stark Industries Fabricator, he attempted to stop him from leaving and doing any damage to the MCU.
- Despite running away from the battle at Happy's apartment and hearing the truth from the MCU's Peter when he did a broadcast to lure the villains, including the Green Goblin, into a trap, he still decided to help Spider-Man finish what he started, even though he could have sat out, as he would rather help a friend and to ensure the group went back home with a second chance, especially Norman as he didn't want Harry to go through the pain of losing his father again.
- He protected his Peter and his The Amazing Spider-Man's counterpart from Electro.
- Although he tried to kill him, he helped the Spider-Men cure Electro of his powers and reverted him back to Max Dillon.
- Despite being held prisoner by him, he still defended Doctor Strange from the Green Goblin's razor bats, even though the bats hurt him badly.
- He stopped the Green Goblin from leaving so he wouldn't blow up the Macchina di Kadavus.
- When the Statue of Liberty collapsed, he immediately went to get Max and used his arms to save his life as he took him somewhere safe.
- After acquiring the Arc Reactor from the MCU, he decided to use it in place of his malfunctioning reactor to solve the energy crisis in his home universe.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He failed the high admirable standards of the MCU hardly, as despite his lack of resources, he still had to compete with the three Spider-Men who played a more direct and pivotal role in saving the multiverse as well as some of the other heroes in the MCU including Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Widow and numerous other characters who have done a lot more than him.
- While one could argue that his sacrifice saved millions of lives, it was retconned when he went to the MCU before he fell into the river, which means it never happened.
- He had a jerkish moment where he smilled after tricking Electro and enjoyed sapping him.
Trivia[]
- Originally the first draft of Doctor Octopus was supposed to be released in Spider-Man 2, with the then-working title of Amazing Spider-Man. If it were to be published, the resulting Doctor Octopus wouldn't even be a hero to begin with.
- He was originally Inconsistently Admirable due to his villainous actions, but it was confirmed in the film that all of his crimes as a villain were done under the influence of his tentacles, and his actions when freed of their influence, such as feeling remorse for all he had done which allowed him to stand out enough to be Pure Good, as well as sacrificing himself to save New York City and stopping the multiverse from being destroyed. However, once it was decided that the MCU variants failed their admirable standard badly and his original counterpart spent most of his screentime as a villain who only redeemed himself and got forgiven at the end, he was entirely removed from Pure Good.
- He is one of few Heroic Benchmarks to also be Inconsistently Heinous.
- It was once believed that he was the only one of the villains to not be sent to the MCU moments before his death due a vague line from the film, however his actor confirmed that he was teleported moments before falling in river.
- If this wasn’t confirmed, the MCU Doctor octopus would be conflicting good due to just being kind.
